Practical Demonstration for Agriculture Students
The Department of Agriculture, Mahakaushal University, Jabalpur, conducted a practical demonstration for first-year students on various methods of nursery raising in the agricultural field and net house.
During the session, students were introduced to the technique of raising seedlings in a limited space using plug trays. They learned how to fill each cell with a suitable growing medium, sow seeds, provide light irrigation, and carry out the initial care required for healthy seedling development.
Practical demonstrations were conducted on nursery raising techniques for various crops, including Brinjal (eggplant), Tomato, Chilli, and Marigold. Students were also familiarised with the use of different growing media, such as cocopeat, vermicompost/compost, and perlite, as appropriate for plug-tray nursery production.
In addition, students received hands-on training in preparing nursery beds inside the net house. The demonstration covered land preparation, making the soil friable, constructing raised beds of suitable dimensions, incorporating Farmyard Manure (FYM), compost, and other suitable growing media as required, and sowing seeds at appropriate spacing and depth. Students also learned the importance of light irrigation and regular maintenance in producing healthy seedlings.
Furthermore, a practical demonstration was conducted on the safe and proper transplantation of seedlings from the nursery to another location. Students were guided on appropriate handling techniques to minimise damage to seedlings and support their successful establishment after transplantation.
This hands-on learning activity provided students with valuable practical knowledge of modern nursery management and seedling production techniques, helping them strengthen their understanding of essential agricultural practices.
